R&D Mechanical Engineering Advisor - Actuation Systems

Halliburton Drill Bits and Services is looking for an exceptional and innovative mechanical engineer with expertise in the area of electro-mechanical and/or hydraulic actuation systems. This engineer must be an expert in developing robust and cost-effective solutions for electro-mechanical actuation/motor control systems and associated electronics.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Be the subject matter expert in design of electro-mechanical and/or hydraulic actuation systems for drilling tools and provide expertise and technical guidance to different project/product teams.
  • Advance the state-of-art in packaging techniques for electro-mechanical systems and develop new and unique packaging methods to improve mechanical robustness while maintaining system performance.
  • Perform proof-of-concept studies, including hardware development and testing to prove viability of new electro-mechanical actuation systems prior to implementation in product.
  • Execute on detailed design to implement design into drilling tools and execute on prototype testing and field trials.
  • Develop standards, guidelines and best practices to drive consistency in electromechanical design and electronics packaging.
  • Mentor and coach the different project teams in development of actuation systems.
  • Be a key member or leader for special projects to address critical field failures and drive implementation of corrective actions to eliminate the failure.

 

Education/Experience/Expertise:

  • Bachelors’ degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Proven track record of successfully designing and implementing actuation systems using electro-mechanical or hydro-mechanical techniques in harsh environments.
  • 10+ years’ experience in working on various actuation systems and packaging for high vibration, pressure and temperature.
  • Very good understanding of challenges and trade-offs with electro-mechanical packaging of sensors, actuation systems for drilling application.
  • Experience with design and development of lab scale testing of electromechanical systems.
  • Experience with performing field failure analysis to determine root cause of failure and implementing corrective solutions.
  • Familiarity with signal processing techniques is a plus.
  • Experience with SolidWorks or NX is a plus.

  • Demonstrated ability to coach and advise other engineers.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems creatively.
  • Must be proactive, self-driven, results-oriented.
