Principal Software Engineer (IOT and Messaging Focus)


This opening is for a position in the software development department of Sperry Drilling which is a Halliburton PSL (Product Service Line). Sperry develops high tech tools to measure the properties of rocks and fluids to ensure that productive oil wells can be drilled efficiently. Our software must work seamlessly with the embedded firmware in our downhole tools to deliver accurate data to our customers, and ensure that our tools can operate safely and efficiently. Well designed, modular architecture is critical to allow for rapid development to support the constantly evolving marketplace. Halliburton is seeking software developers skilled in IOT and messaging for a team tasked with a new software design that will represent a large step forward in our capabilities.


The candidate will be designing software from concept to commercialization. The candidate will be developing for new products, but will need to quickly familiarize themselves with a large existing codebase and leverage it where necessary to complete tasks more quickly. The candidate must be able to work independently, evaluate and execute tasks in a timely manner to predict and meet project deadlines.


Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in Computer Science or Electrical/Computer Engineering.  MS is preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • At least 10 years relevant work experience is desired – but the primary selection criteria is technical proficiency


Qualifications (candidate should have working knowledge of all areas, demonstrated track record of executing successful designs in several):

  • Proficient in developing .NET (C#) server-like back end services
  • REST services and WebSockets
  • Data aggregation and time based correlation
  • Messaging protocols and ability to choose based on design tradeoffs
  • NoSQL databases for time based data
  • Data formats (e.g. JSON, Binary, Proto-buffers, Avro) and pros and cons of each in context of application requirements
  • Device registry and management
  • TCP/IP
  • C/C++ programming and ability to analyze legacy code written in these languages
  • Data acquisition, processing, analysis and presentation of high throughput real-time data.
  • Managed C++ (CLI) and Interop
  • Unit testing


Key Responsibilities:

  • Candidates will apply their knowledge in software to choose the appropriate design patterns, messaging protocols and data formats to create efficient, stable and upgradable software designs.
  • Work as integral part of multi-discipline team including project management, firmware engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and testing.
  • Participate in developing and analyzing design requirements
  • Investigate problems in design, recommend and implement solutions
  • Execute designs and test plans to ensure systems meet written specifications and requirements for functionality and performance




Work Authorization: Candidates who are not a United States Citizen, Lawful Permanent Resident, Refugee, or Asylee must be an F-1 visa holder with 9 months to one full year of Optional Practical Training (OPT) in the United States.
