Role synopsis

The Lead Principal Engineer is anticipated as interim title given to the Advisor position, pending confirmation and appointment to the BP Group Technical Advisor program following the required panel review process. Guidance on further development may be given subsequent to the panel review.

The Lead Principal Engineer provides technical expertise for BP’s Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) and Alkylation process units, supporting safety, operations, process design assurance, yield optimization, catalyst selection and technology strategy decisions. This person also provides technical leadership to the FCC and Alkylation Continuous Improvement Forums (CIFs), participates in the industry forums, including the FCC and HF Alkylation safety forums, brings consistency to BP’s interaction with technology suppliers, and identifies and promotes use of best practices for operation and design. The Lead Principal Engineer contributes to the technology organizational capability by identifying and mentoring potential future FCC and Alkylation specialists in the refineries and in RTE, and also by ensuring high-quality, readily accessible documentation of BP and industry experience.

This position will work with FCC and Alkylation practitioners in BP and with the Advisor community with no direct reports. This position can be based in RTE offices in Sunbury or Naperville or in any BP operated refinery.

Key accountabilities

Provide technical advice to senior leaders to impact business delivery, company strategy and industry direction and provide technical assurance to enhance business performance.

Manage relationships with key contacts at the refineries, other RTE groups, and other technical communities in BP.

Within the bounds of anti-trust and anti-competition regulations and the BP code of conduct develop and maintain relationships with industry peers and industry technical forums so as to expand overall technical knowledge within BP.

Lead development and transfer of best practice methodologies, specifically by sharing and documenting best practices in the design, operation and optimization of FCC and Alkylation units.

Provide training, guidance and leadership opportunities to less experienced engineers in key skill areas to assist in developing the next generation of experts/specialists thus building organisational capability and capacity.

Drive process safety improvements through consistent application of BP safety requirements and understanding of past industry experience.

Provide vision, purpose and clear direction for the BP FCC and Alkylation communities as a member of the CI Forum leadership teams.

Lead the FCC and Alkylation technology review and planning processes, and understand and promote best technology selection application at BP’s FCC and Alkylation units.

Provide guidance to refinery resources for optimization, start-up, shutdown, turnaround, or troubleshooting for FCC or Alkylation units within BP.

Identify skill deficiencies in the refineries in the FCC and Alkylation areas and help to build training and development plans to allow progression to the required skill levels.

Essential Education

Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or equivalent

Essential experience and job requirements

  • Extensive applied experience in FCC technology and/or operations.
  • Strong influencing and communications skills.
  • Demonstrated written, verbal and presentation skills to effectively influence a range of audiences from Operators to Executives.

Desirable criteria & qualifications

  • Preferably 10+ years of experience in FCC
  • Applied experience in Alkylation technology and/or operations.
  • Experience in refinery operations, maintenance, projects, production control and corrosion control.
  • Demonstrated ability to network internationally and deliver technology support to multiple refineries.
  • Application of Continuous Improvement and Root Cause Analysis techniques.
  • Simulation software applications (such as Hysys or Petrosim) are a plus.
