Primary Purpose:

Responsible for the oversight of all aspects of tax accounting functions. The person will be responsible for management and direction of the overall income tax provision process for Sempra and its subsidiaries under US GAAP. The position is also responsible for SEC reporting of all tax matters including income tax footnotes, and directing staff to help ensure that the tax accounts of the Sempra family of companies are properly reported and reconciled for financial statement purposes. Responsibilities include validation of amounts recorded in all of the impacted balance sheet accounts, including tax receivable/payable and inventory of deferred taxes.  Responsible for understanding of the underlying activity supporting the tax accounting, and will require a detailed understanding of tax accounting issues within Sempra’s businesses. The position will be responsible for the research, development and implementation of tax accounting and tax policies, procedures and internal controls for Sempra Energy and its subsidiaries.

 

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Evaluate thorough tax accounting impacts under Accounting for Income Taxes, ASC 740, of proposed complex domestic and international business transactions including acquisitions, dispositions, restructuring, and prepare written analysis and conclusions. Responsible for technical tax research, reviewing and interpreting GAAP accounting literature and ensure appropriate application throughout the organization.
  • Manage preparation and review for accuracy of income tax provision process for all Sempra’s reporting segments and Consolidated Financials.
  • Responsible for analyzing proposed accounting pronouncements to determine the potential tax effects on Sempra Energy and, when appropriate, the preparation of comment letters to GAAP regulatory bodies regarding Sempra’s position on proposed pronouncements. Directs the implementation of applicable new accounting related to income taxes and tax accounting for new income tax rules.
  • Responsible for SEC disclosures relating to income taxes including internal management reporting.
  • Requires interaction with external auditors with primary interaction with external tax auditors.
  • Manage and oversee the periodic GAAP reconciliation of all federal, state, and foreign tax accounts for Sempra and its subsidiaries, including inventory of deferred income taxes by each legal entity.
  • Implement and direct corporate compliance programs with respect to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and monitor results.  Evaluate and recommend improvements with respect to internal controls.
  • Responsible for financial reporting activities to assure all stakeholders receive accurate information on a timely basis.  Monitor and communicate actual results against plan and prior periods.
  • Supervises managers and staff; mentor in their professional development.  Performs administrative & supervisory tasks such as performance reviews, coaching and guidance, recruiting, etc.

External Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • BS Accounting with CPA required
  • Masters in Accounting or Tax desired
  • Energy, manufacturing and regulated utilities experience preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years overall tax experience, combination of corporate and Big 4 public accounting at Manager level or higher desirable; most recent experience in a corporate tax department or client with a complex legal organization with both C-Corp, minority interest and partnership accounting
  • Must have strong ASC 740 experience
  • Proven leadership abilities including, supervision of staff and project management
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
